Ingredients

  • 2lb fresh fish
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 & ½ cup water
  • Oil

Instructions

  1. Clean and prepare the fish. Cut it into small to medium pieces and remove any bones.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the self-raising flour, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to ensure that the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and mix it with water. Pour the mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk until a smooth batter is formed.
  4. In a deep frying pan, heat the oil on medium-high heat. Use enough oil to submerge the fish pieces completely.
  5. Dip the fish pieces into the batter, one at a time, making sure to coat them evenly.
  6. Carefully place the battered fish into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan, as this will cause the temperature of the oil to drop and result in soggy fish.
  7. Fry the fish for 3-4 minutes on each side or until the batter turns golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove the fish from the oil and place it on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
  8. Repeat the process until all the fish pieces are fried.
  9. Serve the crispy battered fish hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use fresh fish for the best taste and texture. You can use any white fish such as cod, haddock, or tilapia.
  • If you don't have self-raising flour, you can substitute it with all-purpose flour and baking powder in a 1:2 ratio.
  • To make the batter even more flavorful, you can add your favorite herbs and spices, such as paprika, cayenne pepper, or thyme.
  • Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the oil. The ideal temperature for frying fish is between 350-375°F.
  • Don't stack the fried fish on top of each other as this will cause the batter to become soggy.
  • For a healthier option, you can bake the fish instead of frying it. Preheat your oven to 425°F, coat the fish in the batter, and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
